A Slow and Sunny Day in Hawi, Hawaii

Hawi is one of those small Hawaiian towns that feels like it’s been frozen in time, in the best way possible. Nestled at the northern tip of the Big Island, this little town isn’t much more than a single main street with a handful of charming shops and restaurants. But that’s what makes it special—it’s got that easygoing, old-school Hawaiian vibe that Hawai’i is known for.

I rolled into town mid-morning, after dropping my wife off to her horseback ride along the hills of Hawai’i, the sun already high and warm, casting a golden glow over the simple wooden storefronts. There’s no rush in Hawi, and that’s exactly how I wanted to spend my day—just letting it unfold at its own pace.

First stop: Kohala Coffee Mill. A classic little spot, the kind where you walk in and immediately smell the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. I ordered a latte, watching as the barista crafted it with care, and stepped outside to sip it under the shade. Inside, the glass display case was filled with fresh-baked pastries—flaky croissants, muffins, and other tempting treats. I was tempted, but I knew I had to have lunch with the wife, so I held back (for now). The coffee was smooth and creamy, the kind that makes you want to linger a little longer before heading on.

After soaking in the moment, I wandered a little further and found myself at KO Pizza, just around the corner. As soon as I got close, the scent of bubbling cheese, roasted garlic, and fresh dough hit me. There was no way I was walking past that without grabbing a slice. KO Pizza keeps it simple—thin crust, just the right amount of sauce and cheese, baked to that perfect crispiness. I found a seat outside, under the shade, and took my first bite. The flavors were spot on, and the price? A rare find in Hawaii—affordable and satisfying.

Of course, I couldn’t leave Hawi without a little something sweet. So I circled back to Kohala Coffee Mill for a slice of banana crème pie. And let me tell you, this was the real treat of the day. Silky, creamy, with just the right balance of fresh banana flavor and flaky crust—it was pure bliss in dessert form. Luckily I got a small personal serving. I just ate half so I can share the rest with the wife.

Hawi isn’t a place for sightseeing or rushing from one attraction to another. It’s a place to just be. A place where time slows down, where you can sip a coffee, enjoy a slice of pizza, and top it all off with the best banana crème pie you’ve ever had—all while watching the world move at a gentle, island pace. And honestly, that’s exactly what I needed.
